We welcome visitors to
'Church and State'
A free exhibition
10th October 2026 - 20th November 2027
Set in our magnificent 12th century building, the narrative explores the influence of the Church in Norman times, beginning before the 1066 battle and rising with royal patronage following the Conquest, leaving the Christian legacy we see today.
From January 2027, the exhibition will feature images from the Bayeux Tapestry, setting the scenes into their ecclesiastical context.
St Mary's, built as part of the Abbey, on the site of the 1066 battle has a unique history. An exceptional Norman church, it has served the spiritual needs of Battle for over 900 years. St Mary's survived the dissolution of the monastery, remained largely intact through the Puritan Iconoclasm and held on to its treasures and privileges. Self-guided visits, 9.30am - 5.30pm daily, except during services and special events.
Visits from schools by arrangement.
The British Museum Bayeux around Britain is supported by WorldQuant.
